Who doesn’t love to shop through e-commerce website? Although the perks of online shopping are very optimized there are some impatient shoppers who would love to see the perks of e-commerce shopping in a physical store. Founded in 2013, Future Proof Retail has been working to bring the comfort of e-commerce shopping to retail stores saving time and cost for shoppers and retailers.
In order to know more about their vision and mission let’s look into the exclusive interview of TechNewsWorld with President of FutureProof Retail, Di Di Chan which took place in February, 2018.
-FutureProof Retails’ mission and the purpose of starting the company
According to Di Di Chan the mission is to bring the best of online shopping offline. She planned it with her partner whom she met in a philosophy club. Their initial topic was how to maximize potential when dealing with time.
She also said, “I wanted to buy a bottle of water for the airplane. We were in a rush, and I wasn’t able to buy my water because I didn’t have cash on me and didn’t have time. At that moment, we realized that waiting in line is one of the ways time is wasted, and we thought we should combine our strengths and talents and do something about it.”
This moment sparked the idea of shopping in physical shops with the perks of online shopping, she said.
–Di Di Chans’ career path and how she got to where she is today
Although she is a president of a tech company she initially wanted to pursue studies in Law for a long time. About her high school plan she said, “I was going to do international law focused on education or sustainable development. I got an undergraduate degree in global studies and went to grad school in economics”.
Everything changed when she went to New York, as per her statement. She was there for her masters in economics. She was working for the department chair who also happened to be her advisor and mentor. Later when she asked him for a recommendation he suggested that he saw an entrepreneur in her. That’s when she started re-thinking her plan and started to find out what she was good at. She took a year off and started an education startup. Later she said, “I started working with students from 15 different countries with an education consultancy that helped students discover their passion and make the connection between college and career. I realized there’s a huge gap between education and career”.
After this she met her partner. Talking about time, they planned the company together. Each of them had their own potentials that made it fall in place. Her partner was in technology and she was in research, human development and finance. Based on their talent and enthusiasm they created FutureProof Retail.
–How FutureProof Retail is re-defining retail checkout
Chan thinks it’s important to fetch the best aspects of online shopping to offline retailers. She has explained the definition of retail checkout in two ways. From customer’s perspective she thinks that in traditional retail, there are always people who help the shoppers to find what they need so the shoppers can be satisfied at the end of shopping. Bringing the online benefits to offline retailers is the main task, making it the concentration. Also it’s mandatory that any and every shopper can enjoy this new experience. In offline shopping the apps and websites keep showing the recommended list of items that are relevant to customers’ need, minimizing the time needed to checkout. From retail’s perspective her words are “costs are increasing— for goods, operations and service— but prices can’t be increased too much. The only way to make up for that is to have increased efficiency. Bringing online experiences offline lets them change retail and to offer really good service, by combining the strength of technology and the strength of human service”.
–Solutions offered by FutureProof Retail
They have a mobile application which has marketing potential upon checkout. The application can scan through customers’ demand and show what customer needs as example if someone searches hot dog, the scan result may suggest either hot dog or ketchup being relevant to search.
She said that FutureProof Retail is customizable and flexible which is the ultimate solution to offline retail.
–Advice to women who want to work in tech or start a business in tech
Chan’s advice comprise of assurance, hard work and learning from mistakes. Having faith in oneself is necessary before doing something new. Having a mentor is useful also it should be kept in mind that mistakes are bound to happen and learning and rectifying mistakes will only make someone better.
She stated, “If we want to be on an equal footing and we want to do well, the best way to do it is to go through all the mistakes, keep getting up, keep trusting that you’re smart and capable of figuring this out”.
Her suggestion on being entrepreneur is that one doesn’t have to be perfect. To start a business the best way is to be the boss instead of pleasing the boss.
